Ellen James is the founder and president of Ellen James Associates, a coaching and management consulting firm in San Francisco. She has more than twenty years of experience in the areas of organizational leadership, executive coaching, and career development. Her specialty is helping business owners and co-founders build a secure and trusting partnership so that their strengths and differences will support, rather than undermine, their business strategy.
Ellen began her training in organizational psychology at the Yale School of Management, where she held the position of Associate Director of Career Planning. At Georgetown University she chose to focus her career on the particular challenges of leadership and communication at senior levels of management. She brings psychological depth as well as broad management experience to her coaching practice, having worked with a wide range of companies and nonprofit institutions, including Google, Oracle, ABC-Television, The Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Society, Yale University, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Corporate clients have sought her out to help manage the challenges of transition within their organizations, among them the U.S. Federal Courts system, Yale-New Haven Hospital, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Children’s National Medical Center.
An expert in interpersonal dynamics, Ellen spent five years as an executive coach with the Leadership Institute at Fannie Mae, the mortgage investment company based in Washington, DC, where she worked with company directors and their teams in a program designed to assess and strengthen leadership competencies, improve communication, manage stress and conflict, and help talented individuals achieve higher goals for performance and satisfaction in their work.
Ellen is a member of the International Coaching Federation and the Past President of North Bay Coaches, ICF’s Northern California chapter. She is certified in Organizational Development consulting and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
